Healthy Hot Chocolate

Updated: Nov 12, 2019

It's that time of year.. cooler weather and cozy warm drinks!

My personal favorite is hot chocolate & I'm glad to say that I nailed the perfect healthy version of this popular go-to drink.

Before I get into the recipe, I just want to talk about the ingredients list on the normal store bought hot chocolate packages... spoiler alert: It's not pretty.

This is Nestle's original instant hot chocolate. The first ingredient on an ingredients list is what the product contains most of, so as you can see, It's mostly sugar. Nothing else on this list is in any way good for our bodies either. Vegetable oils, corn syrup, and sucralose are known to be VERY damaging to our body.

Sorry if this bursts your bubble, but that's why I made this version of hot chocolate that actually BENEFITS your body and tastes just like the real deal! (and don't just take my word on it.. my whole family agrees;)

RECIPE:

1.5 tbsp cacao powder

1.5 tbsp pure maple syrup

1 tbsp coconut oil

1 cup hot water

1 cup almond milk

DIRECTIONS:

Mix all ingredients in a blender, with a hand frother, or on the stovetop. Can't go wrong!

Cacao powder is a powerful superfood that has so many amazing health benefits. It is the purest version of chocolate and is perfect in this recipe. Maple syrup is one of the healthiest and natural forms of sugar and contains nutrients and antioxidants. Unlike processed sugar, it doesn't spike your blood glucose levels as much since it has a significantly lower glycemic index. You can buy these products through my amazon links here.

You could use whole milk if you'd like, but since I try to avoid dairy, I usually stick with almond or coconut milk.

As you can tell, I really love this recipe, and I hope you do, too! Let me know in the comments how yours turned out! :)
